The gun was intended for cruisers and battleships, it was produced in 1880s-90s at Obukhovsky steel works. In 1910s a number of guns of this type was moved to coastal batteries of Finnish gulf
The only survived sample (barrel No 48 produced in 1889, mount No 17 produced in 1888) is displayed now at Sveaborg fortress
